Fire Resistance Rating (FD30, FD60, etc.)

  • Fire doors are classified by the number of minutes they can resist fire:
    • FD30 → 30 minutes
    • FD60 → 60 minutes
    • FD90 / FD120 → 90 or 120 minutes (for specialist/high-risk buildings)
  • Most residential settings require FD30.
  • Higher-risk or commercial premises may need FD60 or more.

Essential Features of a Fire Door

  • Must have intumescent seals (expand in heat to stop smoke and fire spread).
  • Must have cold smoke seals (in many cases).
  • Must be fitted with fire-rated hinges (usually 3 steel hinges).
  • Self-closing device (mandatory in most settings).
  • Must be installed as per the manufacturer’s fire test evidence (incorrect installation voids certification).

  • BS 476 Part 22 → Fire resistance tests for door assemblies.
  • BS EN 1634-1 → Current European test standard (widely used in the UK).
  • BS 8214:2016 → Code of practice for installation, use and maintenance of fire doors.

Certification

  • Look for third-party certification (e.g. BM TRADA Q-Mark or Certifire).
  • Certificate confirms the door set (door, frame, glazing, hardware) was tested as a whole.
